Heroic Ambassadors Program: Supporting Student Success via Lessons in Growth Mindset
Abstract
Improving academic and personal success of CSU Bakersfield diverse student populations is critical for the area’s social and economic well-being. The Heroic Ambassadors Program at CSU Bakersfield is an inter-disciplinary group consisting of faculty, staff and students that are learning to apply relevant principles of social psychology to strengthen students’ capabilities to be resilient and independent learners. A cadre of twenty-five participated in three trainings via Phil Zimbardo’s Heroic Imagination Project (Zimbardo, 2006) to develop their knowledge and skills for teaching students “student success” skills. The train-the-trainer model involves lessons in the growth mindset, bystander intervention, and bias reduction. The trainings served as the foundation to conduct workshops with students across disciplines. The goal of the trainings is to prepare facilitators to conduct workshops with students to support their success in their academic, psychological, and emotional journey toward graduation. The presentation will review the institutional steps that can be replicated at other higher ed institutions. The proposed symposium targets WPA’s strands of inclusion, diversity, equity, accessibility and student success.
