IDEAS for all: Building Collaborative Online International Learning into signature assignments.

Abstract

Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) is a curricular innovation grounded in best practices in teaching and learning because it is project-based, student-centered, technology enhanced, and equity oriented. COIL-modeled courses support campus internationalization initiatives and offer more more students access to opportunities for building global, international, and intercultural competence than study abroad (Brown & Jones, 2007; Soria & Troisi, 2014). Moreover, COIL-modeled courses may provide opportunities for minoritized students to showcase strengths not assessed in traditional contexts. This session, showcases a Community of Practice (CoP) which adapted signature assignments to include COIL activities. Participants will compare practices in COIL adaptation, including the opportunities and challenges. Presenters will provide resources for assessing global, international, and intercultural Learning Outcomes. Presenters will model how we adapted signature assignment rubrics to assess global, international and intercultural learning outcomes achieved through COIL activities. Presenters will also model scaffold-activities in which students explore issues of diversity and inclusion, examining both inter as well as intra cultural competence. Audience participants will identify a course assignment to adapt to a COIL enhanced signature assignment, compare types of activities which meet the LO of their course, and be able to create rubrics to measure global, international, and intercultural Learning Outcomes.
