SI4: Men of Color in Education: Becoming Teachers for Social Change

Abstract

"According to the U.S. Department of Education, Latino and African American men represent a mere 2% of the teaching workforce nationally; and within the U.S. public school system, students of color–particularly Latino and African American boys–are oftentimes mislabeled as “at-risk” and mischaracterized as “disruptive” because they choose to challenge and resist a culturally insensitive curriculum and a teacher who is unable to relate to the cultural identities and lived experiences of their students.

At CSUF, Men of Color in Education (MCE) was designed to recruit and support Latino and African American men towards a teaching credential program, and ultimately becoming a teacher for social change. Our educational institutions are in dire need of male educators of color who are committed to creating sites of resistance within their classrooms where students can begin developing a culture of resilience and resistance, engaging in critical conversations related to their identities and lived experiences, and working collectively to challenge the structural inequalities that exist within their social and educational contexts."
