The Los Angeles Diversity Project: Promoting University Students’ Cultural Competence
Abstract
The Los Angeles Diversity Project is the outcome of a campus-wide Faculty Learning Community from California State University Los Angeles. The goal was to encourage faculty to integrate the City of Los Angeles as the curricular focal point in cross-disciplinary course assignments. While initially created for students in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, this project can be modified easily and adapted in an interdepartmental manner. The project can be integrated into any university level course that aims to incorporate applied civic and community learning. This presentation will include a step-by-step approach in how to promote students’ cultural and linguistic awareness by conducting an ethnographic survey and collect local demographic data reflective of a surrounding community. Implications for student learning outcomes will be presented and discussed. Data will be shared from previous student presentations on the importance of cultural competence specific to the field of teacher special education preparation programs and speech-language pathology/audiology.
