Using the Social Engagement System to Improve Student Success
Abstract
In the latter part of the last century, psychologist Dr. Stephen Porges developed his polyvagal theory to explain the workings of the nervous system more accurately. What makes the theory relevant to educators wanting to be more inclusive and equitable to a diverse student population is his analysis of the social engagement system (SES). Social engagement is a physiological state allowing humans to interact calmly and closely with each other, creating an environment in the body for optimal internal organ functions and high-level cognition. Humans intuitively trigger the SES in others by sending and receiving the message of safety with certain cues, specifically vocal tone, facial expression, and eye contact. With increased awareness, you can intentionally use these cues to trigger the SES to increase the level of student success. Attendees will leave the presentation with the ability to consciously switch on the SAS in others.
