Inclusive is Conducive in the College Classroom
Abstract
Inclusive is Conducive in the College Classroom
College classrooms have become more learning diverse due to student- learning challenges such as Asperger’s, autism and ADHD.
However, as more neurodivergent students are mainstreamed into colleges and universities, instructors may grapple with ways to promote student success in a classroom that is inclusive and equitable for all students. Yet, fostering such a classroom takes time and creativity, both of which require the combined efforts of instructors and students. Though instructors may develop and present curriculum, active student involvement is crucial to the learning success of all class participants.
Thus, instructors who exemplify and promote inclusivity on the first day of class create an atmosphere of acceptance and respect that students will acknowledge and assume. Instructors who develop methods of inclusivity to utilize all students’ abilities through creative team, group and peer work allow students to share their strengths and talents to benefit their classmates as well as themselves.
