Empowering Change Agents for Addressing Equity Gaps Through Intergroup Dialogue

12:30 PM - 2:00 PM

Abstract

The increasing diversity in the U.S. (Census Bureau, 2020) has raised attention to how colleges are tackling diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts. While many universities have implemented initiatives, criticisms exist about surface-level approaches that often are the crux of DEI within academia. To confront systemic issues head-on, we proposed a human-centered approach to DEI programming that is embedded in social justice and equity-mindedness through the power of intergroup dialogue. Intergroup dialogue (IGD) infuses the power of dialogic tools, collaboration, and action planning to create meaningful change that results in greater awareness of equity issues and improves skills to take action (e.g., Kelly, et al., 2022).

Our team of educators from two CSU campuses along with a community organization partnered to address students’ sense of belonging and equity gaps at eight CSUs. Our two-semester virtual program, engaged 32 students, staff, and faculty to (1) generate reflective dialogue around systemic barriers inhibiting timely graduation, and (2) create collaborative faculty/student/staff action projects that address these equity issues. We will describe our process, outcomes, and implications of the program and engage audience members in a dialogue activity that unpacks the many challenges to addressing sense of belonging and equity gaps at our institutions.
