Empowering Student Agency: Integrating AI Tools to Address Educational Challenges Post-Pandemic

1:15 PM - 2:45 PM

Abstract

In late 2022, educators were forced to recognize the revolutionary changes occurring within educational landscapes, primarily driven by Artificial Intelligence (AI). In Fall 2023, we implemented ChatGPT into a first-year composition course, encouraging students to use AI to help interpret research findings for an annotated bibliography assignment. Incorporating tools like ChatGPT as writing support, in tandem with pedagogies such as connected learning and expressivism, allowed students to collaborate with AI to help contextualize research, develop critical thinking skills, and provide constructive writing feedback on topics they’re passionate about in an attempt to encourage more authentic engagement in the classroom. This assignment allowed students to strengthen AI literacy skills as well as strengthen reading comprehension skills. This activity was then used to encourage self-assessment and boost student agency. Our interactive session aims to explain the pedagogical approach behind this classroom activity, encourage educators to use this activity and others within the classroom, as well as facilitate a live activity for participants to engage with ChatGPT in a collaborative manner. Exploring ways to productively use this technology will allow both faculty and students to engage more authentically together as well as achieve learning outcomes.
