Welcome to Our Online Learning Community! Creating Belonging Asynchronously

12:30 PM - 2:00 PM

Abstract

How can you create an online learning community that is welcoming, engaging, and inclusive? How can you make your students feel connected to each other, to you, and to the course content, even in an asynchronous format? In this interactive presentation, you will learn three effective strategies to foster and assess student belonging in asynchronous online courses. You will also see examples and tips from real courses that have used these strategies successfully, and you will have the opportunity to reflect on how you can apply them to your own online courses. Moreover, you will discover a free survey tool that helps you collect anonymous student feedback and optimize the social aspects of your online courses, such as belonging, connectedness, identity safety, and trust. You will also access the online collection of evidence-based strategy guides that complement the survey tool and enhance equity in students’ learning experiences. To wrap up, you will examine some quantitative and qualitative data from courses that have used the survey tool and the strategies together and learn how they strengthened the online learning environment for student success.
