Backward Design in Action: A College-Based Approach to Instructional Design
2:15 PM - 2:45 PMAbstract
This 30-minute symposium session will explore a unique instructional design model at California State University, Fullerton (CSUF) that leads to inclusive learning assessments and outcomes. CSUF has taken an innovative approach to instructional design by housing a discipline-specific ID in each college while continuing to manage the team centrally through the Academic Technology Center. This approach allows for an individual college focus in addition to cross-college collaboration. The instructional designers engage in faculty consultations, meet with Associate Deans to coordinate college projects and initiatives and facilitate workshops to establish connections and build rapport with faculty.
This session will highlight the Collaborative Mapping Model (Drysdale, 2019). This model guides the college-based instructional designers' partnership with faculty in creating assessments and activities while utilizing discipline-specific pedagogical practices that promote student engagement and belonging. The presentation will share insights into the ongoing process of building and refining this model, exploring the challenges faced, best practices discovered, and the continuous evolution of the approach. Attendees will gain practical knowledge on implementing the Collaborative Mapping Model, insights gained through the sharing of case studies, and discuss the emerging best practices that contribute to the model's success.
