Co-Constructing Disability Inclusion SoTL: Institutional Collaborations for Student and Faculty Success

12:30 PM - 2:00 PM

Abstract

Through aligned and visionary leadership at CSU San Bernardino, a new role was established, the Faculty Inclusion Fellow for Disability, Difference and Accommodation. The role is an equity intervention at its core that includes many facets: equity-based teaching of new inclusion-themed courses, ongoing volumes of faculty professional development both synchronous and asynchronous, one-on-one faculty coaching, research collaborations, building of creative new college-level inclusion liaisons, proactive supports for unique aspects of teaching such as clinicals and fieldwork, the creation of a new neurodiversity space, and a more open line of communication across divisions for the purposes of disability inclusion. The students, faculty, staff, administration, and campus community broadly has been involved every step of the way, co-constructing the knowledge that makes this collaboration authentic and meaningful in curricular and co-curricular spaces alike. In this session, the leadership teams across Faculty Affairs and Student Affairs will share the institutional building blocks the empower other campuses to replicate similar structures, the theories and evidence based practices that inform this effort, why it is important, and the key relationships across the institution that make it possible. As an interactive session, participants will have time to reflect on practices and build new practices in groups.
