Learning about ChatGPT together for novices: Possibilities, omission, bias and teaching implications

3:30 PM - 5:00 PM

Abstract

Bring your laptops and try ChatGPT’s free version in small groups. Experience a jigsaw reading activity, adapted from my work with graduate students in education, to uncover possibilities, omissions, and biases in ChatGPT. We will discuss what “responsible use” for learning might be. Finally, we will explore implications for our work as educators, including reflecting on our existing course assignments and editing a statement to encourage students to cite and learn from the use of generative AI tools. Feel free to join the day of, but emailing me (watanabe@sfsu.edu) of your interest would help me plan logistics.

ChatGPT has become prominent in mainstream journalism since its November 2022 release. My foray into the world of generative AI began in spring 2023 when I received student writing that was very different from prior submitted work. Since AI output is different every time, it is virtually impossible to detect the use of AI. As I did more reading and explored generative AI tools, I began to think about how we as faculty need to recognize its easy access, think about why students might use it, and proactively discuss with students the weaknesses and possibilities of generative AI for learning.
