Creating an engaging student environment through culturally responsive pedagogies

4:30 PM - 6:00 PM

Abstract

This interactive session, grounded on Ladson-Billings concept of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy (2014), will provide five concreate and interdisciplinary methods to create a safe and encouraging learning space relevant to students of color.
Presenter 1 will provide examples of writing guidance and writing prompts that support students’ ability to connect anti-bias practices, parenting, and development.
Presenter 2 will demonstrate how to integrate three principles of Critical Race Theory into pre-service teacher training as they integrate this framework into their future curricula.
Presenter 3 will share how students engage with community sites to conduct student-led projects, turning students into modern-day Lincolns, empowered citizens that understand the importance to take a stance and fight against injustice.
Presenter 4 will show a project based on the pedagogical activism model “Acción poética” and its implications in the classroom over the past year.
Presenter 5 will share her experience modifying a social science course to illustrate the concepts of humility and relationship building in the structure and content of the class .
Attendees can expect to gain a deep understanding of several theoretical and practical approaches and experientially learning about actionable strategies for implementing the frameworks within their courses.
