Equity Intervention: Disability Inclusion's Key Relationships, Structure and Mindset Across the University

1:45 PM - 2:15 PM

Abstract

In this symposium style session, attendees will hear directly from the creators of the first Faculty Inclusion Fellow for Disability, Difference and Accommodation in the CSU system. An equity intervention, this role is designed to de-silo aspects of Student Affairs and Faculty Affairs (along with development of strong relationships with IT and Facilities) because including qualified students is really a team effort that touches many different divisions and gets at the heart of equity work through proactive and collaborative measures.

The session will discuss the relationships, structures and mindsets that made this collaborative effort possible at this time, how other universities could implement something similar in ways that may be right for their campus cultures, and why efforts like these are important to be invested in institutionally. Disability inclusion can be part of any DEI effort and speakers will provide a roadmap of the innovation at CSU San Bernardino.

Speakers will include Associate Provost Dr. Kevin Grisham, AVP of Student Success Dr. Molly Springer, AVP of Faculty Development Dr. Brad Owen, Dr. Jess Nerren, Faculty Inclusion Fellow for Disability Difference and Accommodation, and Lori Palmerton, Ed.D. Candidate and LMFT, Director of Services to Students with Disabilities.

Applying Inclusive Teaching Practices to Online Course Design

2:15 PM - 2:45 PM

Abstract

Learn more about a cross-institutional collaboration to simultaneously address DEI and online course design. Cal State LA, SUNY, and others are working to develop the online platform "Annotations for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Online Course Design".

Test drive the DEI Annotations platform that helps faculty members and instructional designers with guidance on connecting online course design standards with inclusive teaching practices. Annotations include specific techniques, course design and facilitation considerations, and the specific CVC-OEI, OSCQR, QLT, or QM rubric standard addressed.

This flexible framework infuses DEI practices into any online course quality rubric. This approach helps institutions, faculty, and instructional designers ensure equitable, diverse, and inclusive online teaching and learning environments without disrupting existing quality assurance processes. Our project scope is ambitious, and we welcome additional collaborators. Join our session to learn more and get involved.
