Emotionally Intelligent Teaching
4:30 PM - 6:00 PMAbstract
Emotional intelligence refers to skills of perceiving, understanding, expressing, and regulating emotions (Salovey & Mayer, 1990). Research shows that instructors with high emotional intelligence are more effective than others at engaging and connecting with students (Maamari & Majdalani, 2019; Nelson et al., 2005; Palomera et al., 2008). The purpose of this session is to help instructors to adopt more emotionally intelligent teaching practices by (a) sharing information about emotions and their implications for students; (b) identifying emotion goals within the classroom (e.g., helping students to persist in frustrating tasks); (c) sharing research-based strategies for addressing common emotion goals; and (d) providing participants with opportunities to share strategies that have worked in their classrooms and to generate ideas for additional strategies that they could try in the future. These aims will be achieved through a combination of mini-lectures, small group activities, and a large group discussion.
