Teaching Diversity in Action: Integrating Personal Identity in Post-Pandemic Educational Practices
2:15 PM - 2:45 PMAbstract
Educational practices have shifted dramatically post-COVID-19, with an increased emphasis on high-impact practices (HIPs; e.g., Keup & Young, 2021) and humanizing pedagogy (Mapaling & Hoelson, 2022). Our study examines how HIPs enhance student engagement and success through final projects in a child development course, allowing students to creatively express their identities and learnings. By integrating universal design for learning (Coffman & Draper, 2022) principles, students utilized various mediums—children's books, podcasts, blogs, and more—to convey course takeaways to a broader audience. Thematic analysis of over 60 projects identified five categories: identity, diversity and inclusion, anti-bias education, racism and stereotyping, and miscellaneous/other, highlighting the significance of students' social realities in education. Our findings illustrate how personalized learning can extend into real-world applications, promoting social justice. In our presentation, we will spotlight a selection of projects to reveal how personalized learning can translate into real-world application for students. We will also share a how-to-guide for educators so others can integrate action final projects into curricula so students can take their learning beyond the classroom and into leading a socially just world.
