Tips and Trends in Service-Learning

12:30 PM - 2:00 PM

Abstract

In this interactive session, participants will learn how to incorporate service-learning into their courses. We will use discussions, small group breakouts, and pair and shares, after an introduction to the key components of this pedagogy. This session is designed for anyone interested in teaching a service-learning course, regardless of experience having done so. Faculty who have never heard of service-learning, as well as those who have taught with it for years, will all walk away with something new. Service-learning is the only high-impact practice that underrepresented minority students are more likely to engage in, compared to other high-impact practices that are not as easily accessible. This, combined with the benefits of service-learning for community partners and faculty alike, make it an even more transformative experience.. Service-learning can get faculty more excited about revamping their current course offerings and explore their own interests by working with a community partner. Participants will leave with concrete ideas of how to implement, or enhance, service-learning in their own courses.
