Disaster Recover - Backing up to the Cloud

Presentation Abstract

Disaster Recover was one of the many services that was of interest to the CIOs as a result of last year's "cloud readiness" survey. As an outcome, disaster recovery became a priority for the Cloud Accerelation Center (CAC) to assist campuses and leverage cloud-based services in case of an emergency. A hand full of campuses began collaborating as the CAC facilitated the discussion and direction of backing up their on-premise data to the cloud. Using third party solutions and either Azure or AWS cloud services, those campuses are now successfully backing up their data in the cloud and protecting it from a disaster.

The campuses worked together to identify their needs from a business perspective to ensure they could recover their data in a timely manner but they also made sure their practice would conform with audit requirements as well. Based on the requirements they developed a solution(s) that could be easily replicated thought the system. The idea of using a 3rd party solution, in this case, Commvault or Veeam, the campuses felt this was the quickest most efficient way to secure their data. The solution was also designed to be open to any cloud provider that you wish so long as it could meet recovery time objectives and audit requirements.

In this presentation, the CAC and a few participating campus will showcase their design and benefits of backing up data to the cloud. Attendees will hear from the campus why they chose a 3rd party vendor they did and the cost associated with the services. In most cases, the campuses will show substantial savings in time and money by adopting this strategy.

Backing up services to the cloud is not migrating services to the cloud but one step closer in doing so. The campuses each have a strategy of how they are focused on migration and will speak to those future or ongoing efforts.

In this presentation, the CAC will also discuss the options and opportunities available to campus to backing up their data and or migrate to the cloud for disaster recovery purposes. This will be a high-level discussion offering suggestions, options, and resources on how to best formulate your own campus strategy.
