DESCRIPTION

The third edition of the Expository Reading and Writing Curriculum (ERWC 3.0) was launched in June 2019. This 12-hour workshop series provides a preview of the new edition exclusively for teachers who have been previously certified in the CSU ERWC at the high school level. (Certified teachers have attended 24 hours (four full sessions) of ERWC professional learning.)The update is designed to familiarize teachers with the following:

  • Revised ERWC curriculum for English language arts (ELA) course at grade 12
  • New ERWC ELA course at grade 11
  • Specific modules with integrated and designated English language development (ELD) at grades 9-12

The workshop series is two weeksThis professional learning is intended to be an active experience providing hands-on practice with the revised ERWC curriculum. Teachers will explore the revised course design, including updated key concepts, and selected modules. After the June 2019 launch, participants will receive digital access to the published ERWC 3.0 modules. Aligned with the California Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy, the courses emphasize the in-depth study of expository and literary reading, writing, speaking, and listening, using an inquiry-based, rhetorical approach. These rich, adaptable resources, developed by a collaborative group of CSU and high school faculty and specialists, are designed to help students develop the academic literacy skills necessary for success in college and the world of work. Both courses at grades 11 and 12 are approved as a “B” course satisfying the English subject requirement for UC and CSU admission. High schools may opt to offer the grade 11 course, the grade 12 course, or both.
